New Orleans Vampires: History and Legend

Written by the French Quarter’s favorite vampire proprietress, Marita Woywod Crandle, New Orleans Vampires: History and Legends examines New Orleans' reputation as a home for creatures of the night.

Miraculously, the small southern neighborhood, known as The French Quarter, has managed to attract three vampire legends. Crandle examines the origins of these tales, but allows their mysteries to linger.

  • In the early days of Louisiana’s colonization, rumors swirled about the fate of the Casket Girls, a group of mysterious maidens traveling to the New World from France with peculiar casket-shaped boxes.

  • A charismatic man who moved to the French Quarter in the early 1900s eerily resembled a European aristocrat of two hundred years prior bearing the same name.

  • And a pair of brothers terrorized the town with their desire to feed on living human blood during the Great Depression.

Crandle investigate the origins of these legends so intricately woven through New Orleans’ rich history.

“Southern vampires, the other blood suckers.”

Mosquito

A New Orleans Penny Dreadful

Making his way across country from Idaho, Jake Campbell stops off in New Orleans with his dog, Moby, and is quickly drawn into a nightmarish fairytale. Vampires, witches, werewolves, ghosts, and voodoo fill his new world in the French Quarter.

The vampires of New Orleans entice him so alluringly that he may be lost to the tiny neighborhood forever, as so many others who step foot into the Quarter have experienced.

Mosquito volumes is published weekly, in the spirit of a true Penny Dreadful. Penny Dreadfuls were first published in the 1830s as cheap cliff hangers from eight to sixteen pages each, and costing just a penny a piece. They usually contained sensational stories of criminals, pirates, highwaymen, and the supernatural. The penny paper’s most infamous vampire, Varney, was one of the very first vampire stories ever published.
